Hier treft men meer dan 50.000 studenten aan.
Inherent hieraan zijn dan ook de vele cafebedrijven en restaurants.
Daarnaast is er de metaal- en voedselindustrie, maar is ook de houtindustrie een belangrijke industriele pijler.
De stad herbergt ook een botanische tuin, het Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center,
waar men een grote collectie van inheemse planten aantreft.
Uit Austin komen, o.a. Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock en Stevie Ray Vaughan.
